ARTIST RESUME

In my new work I am expressing a sense of spirituality through nature while deeply contemplating my inner thoughts on finding peace within. My inspiration comes as much from art, travel and studying diverse cultures as from nature and the sensuality of life. I often look to the images of Monet, Degas and the gorgeous embellishments on the wood and stones in architecture from around the world and ancient graveyards.

It all began with sewing doll clothes as a small child, and continued to progress into painting and other forms of creative tinkering. Every painting I begin makes its own demands. The wonder of this dialogue with paint, color form and space is what keeps me excited about working. I build up multiple layers of opaque and transparent color, floating my close-ups of flowers, leaves and branches in a complicated, murky surface that has been wiped, scraped, mixed, and transformed. I also often include foliage, seeds, and blossoms to indicate the eternal nature of natural cycles and the nascent stages of growth. Subtle, forms combined with a sublime palette create a meditative, magical, ethereal space. Though based primarily on natural forms and spiritual embodiments, I try to create a dream-space, a realm characterized by imagination and mystery.

I work mostly with acrylic and create my paintings through a process of creation, destruction, and preservation. On canvas I begin with using paper, vintage texts or stencils for the beginning texture. I then apply gold gesso and layer opaque or translucent colors. Sometimes a translucent layer of clear acrylic is added and then selectively removed in order to reveal the original layer.
